Why is this important?

What is the gut microbiome?

A microbiome is a collection of trillions of microbes that live together in a particular environment and can be found everywhere – in the soil, ocean and atmosphere.

In the human body, your gut has one of the highest concentrations of microbes that help us in important functions that are essential for human development, immunity and digestion.

How does this affect me?

Abnormalities in the gut microbiome have been increasingly associated with a range of disorders such as dementia, autism, diabetes, obesity and IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease).

More research needs to be done, especially amongst Asian populations, to find effective ways to improve our health by modifying the gut microbiome.

Why Asian Research?

Much of the groundbreaking research connecting the gut microbiome to many diseases has been conducted in the West. Currently, for every research paper on the Asian gut microbiome, there are 10 more papers based on Western gut microbiomes.

Given the very different lifestyles and, hence, distinct microbiome profiles of Asian communities, we need more Asia-specific gut microbiome research to ensure innovations and therapies will be effective for people of Asian descent.
